This video is hilariously funny… yet a little disturbing at the same time (I cringed during the last song!).
While this is humorous (and I don’t want to take away from the humor of this moment), I have a somber perspective. This video is certainly an exaggeration but speaks to the heart of a question that has rocked me for a few months now… “How cool do we have to be?” This is an issue one of the coolest pastors on the planet addressed in his blog a few months back.
Some church leaders, in a feeble attempt to be relevant, have forgotten how to be real. (Almost like the opposite extreme of legalism… which is fake holiness.) Too many churches have too many people trying too hard to be too cool. All I’m saying… we need more church leaders putting less emphasis on being cool, and more emphasis on being like Christ.
This still doesn’t change the fact that this video is soooo funny to watch!

wow i ill never lok at an elders choir again!
Wow. Just… wow. That was hard to watch.
Oh — and P.S., I agree completely about lame attempts at being cool and how people see right through them.
What, if anything, was the point of a choir singing these songs? It seems from the end of the video like they’re trying to hire themselves out as some kind of novelty act…
Dang….they had me at Eminem!
Lost me at ‘take off all your ‘robes’…
Oh my. That was awful. Kept thinking that those poor old people were told that if they didn’t sing they wouldn’t get their daily meds. Most of them looked like they didn’t know where they were. I’m old…I didn’t think it was funny at all. Yikes!
Were they on some kind of drugged punch? How did he get all these old people to actually do this? Please –this must have been meant as a joke.
And by the way, seriously, Phillip, you have always been blessed with being relevent and cool at the same time. The kids have always loved you, related to you and listened to you. Even if you forgot to use hair gel.
There are no words…other than, “What’s cooler than being cool?”
“Ice Cold!”
I love it that you think my pastor/boss is cool. When I clicked on the link, I hoped it was him.
I was just talking to my husband about how blessed I am that my 12yo son thinks he’s awesome and hears God speak to him through his messages each week.
We’ve certainly run the gamut of cool. But I truly and deeply mean that I have never been more excited about what I see God doing in churches today as we run back to our roots of spirituality. It reminds me of Rev. 2 when it keeps saying, “Hear what the Spirit of the Lord is saying to the churches.” I love it that through blogs and even Google Wave that we can see a better view of the fact that God is whispering the same things to so many of us.
